Sphyrapicus nuchalis

Identification

Black and white head, red forecrown, red chin and throat, female has a white throat, yellow belly, narrow red band on the nape.

Distribution

U.S. and Mexico.

Habitat

Deciduous or mixed forests.

Behaviour

It drills holes in trees and eat the sap as well as insects attracted to it. The diet includes insects icaught in flight, seeds and berries.

They nest in a tree cavity.
