Psilopogon mystacophanos

Identification

Red throat, yellow forehead, red crown, broad black eye line, blue cheeks and band across upper breast. Females - green head, red patches on lores, hindcrown and upper breast sides. Juveniles - green head, yellow forehead and throat.

Distribution

Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand.

Taxonomy

Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized:[1]

  • P. m. mystacophanos (humii) - mainland
  • P. m. ampalus - Batu Islands, Singapore

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and swamps.

Behaviour

It builds a nest in an excavated tree hole and 2-4 white, glossy eggs are laid.
