- Lipaugus streptophorus
Identification
22.5 cm. A distinctive piha, the only sexually dimorphic species of the genus.
- Grey upperparts
- Paler grey underparts, especially on belly
- Pinkish-magenta full collar and undertail-coverts
- Dark brown or blackish bill with paler base of lower mandible.
Females are slightly smaller, the lack the pink collar and their undertail-coverts are cinnamon-rufous.
Juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Tepuis of southeastern Venezuela and adjacent northern Brazil and Guyana.
Not well known, apparently local and uncommon.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Moist montanes and forest egde.
Occurs at 1000 to 1800 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds mainly on fruits, especially of Melastomataceae. Takes also insects.
Breeding
A female collecting nesting material was recorded in April. No other information.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
