Identification

Male

  • Bluish-black plumage
  • Narrow scarlet crown patch (only visible on excitement)
  • White underwings (visible in flight)

The female is rufous-brown above and lighter brown below. If seen well she has a breast with faint streaks.

Similar Species

The female is very similar to female White-lined Tanager, but has a duller head and the breast streaks.

Distribution

South America: found in easter Paraguay to south-eastern Brazil and north-eastern Argentina.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Atlantic Rainforest and forest borders, secondary growth, orchards, city parks and gardens.
