Identification

  • Chestnut crown patch
  • Grey face, nape, and sides of the breast
  • Dull-brown upperparts
  • Rufous underparts
  • White belly
  • Dark brownish-grey feet
  • Slim bill

Distribution

South America: found in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Taxonomy

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • N. r. rufipectus:
  • North-eastern Peru (north of the Amazon)
  • N. r. ruficapilla:
  • Eastern Peru and western Brazil south of the Amazon
  • N. r. nattereri:
  • Southern Amazon basin (Mato Grosso, northern Bolivia and northern Brazil in western Pará)
  • N. r. inundata:
  • Eastern Brazil (eastern Pará) on left bank of Rio Tocantins

Habitat

Humid forests near water. Usually seen in the sub-canopy, undergrowth and forest edges.
