24-30cm. Dark upperparts, rufous or dusky streaked underparts, clear rufous patch on cheek, iris yellow.

Southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and south-eastern Bolivia.

[edit] Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species which in the past has been considered a subspecies of Sharp-shinned Hawk.

Woodlands and forests.

[edit] Behaviour

The diet includes small birds, especially various songbirds such as sparrows. Rarely they will take rodents, lizards, frogs, snakes, and large insects.

A stick nest is made in a large conifer and 4-5 eggs are laid.
