Identification

With 12 - 14cm a rather large Yuhina1:

  • Prominent crest, crown feathers dark greyish-brown, rear side crown feathers rufous-chestnut
  • Ear-coverts and nape grey
  • Blackish sub-moustachial streak
  • Mantle and back mid-brown
  • Rump pale olive brown
  • Slightly forked tail dark brown

Sexes similar, juveniles duller.

Similar Species

Confusion possible with Stripe-throated Yuhina, but colour of crest, submoustachial stripe, unstreaked throat and wings are distinctive.

Distribution

Occurs in the Himalayas from Central Nepal east to Bhutan and north-eastern India. Also in northern Myanmar and southern China (south-western Sichuan and north-western and central Yunnan).

Common in most of its range.
