Psarocolius angustifrons

Identification

Black bill in the Amazonian lowland form, bill yellowish to greenish or even pink in juveniles in all others.

Distribution

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Taxonomy

Seven subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • P. a. salmoni
  • P. a. atrocastaneus
  • P. a. sincipitalis
  • P. a. neglectus
  • P. a. oleagineus
  • P. a. alfredi
  • P. a. angustifrons

Several field guides split this in two species, such that Russet-backed Oropendola becomes monotypic P. angustifrons and all others becoming Yellow-billed Oropendola P. alfredi.

Habitat

Nominate subspecies in lowlands, most others at some elevation. In all areas moist forests to semi-open areas, mostly near water.

Behaviour

Diet

Omnivorous.

Breeding

Colonial nester, using hanging woven nests.
