Alternative names: Goldman's Quail-Dove; Mount Pirri Quail-Dove
- Geotrygon goldmani
Identification
26.5-28.5 cm.
- Russet brown nape and crown, paler on forehead
- Buff malar suborbital stripe
- Grey orbital skin, red eye-rimes and gape with red spot in front of eye
- Brown hindneck
- Brown upperparts and wings, tinged purple
- Grey breast
- Whitish grey belly
- Red feet and legs
- oreas is darker
Females have a brown tinge to gry breast and less reddish brown wings.
Juveniles are dull cinnamon brown above and dusky brown below, edged reddish buff.
Similar species
Similar to Purplish-backed Quail-Dove.
Distribution
Eastern Panama and extreme northwestern Colombia.
Locally common in suitable habitat. oreas is uncommon and has a very small range.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Two subspecies recognized[1]:
- G. g. oreas in Cerro Chucantí in easter Panama Province, Panama
- G. g. goldmani in eastern Darién (Panama) and extreme northwestern Colombia
Sometimes placed in the genus Zentrygon.
Habitat
Moist montanes in foothills and lower highlands.
Occurs at 750 to 1600 m. Recorded down to 90 m in Colombia.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on seeds. Does also swallow small stones as grit.
Forages usually on the forest floor.
Breeding
Few information. One juvenile was found in mid-October.
Movements
This is a resident species.
