Overview

The large artificial lake of San Giuliano and some of the surrounding countryside is a WWF reserve and the area boasts a good range of habitats.

As well as the lake and the River Bradano that feeds it, there are rocky areas and woodland, plantations, farmed land and scrub.

Birds

Notable Species

In spring species such as Black-winged Stilt and Pied Avocet are attracted to the lake, and a range of herons can also be seen including Black-crowned Night Heron, Squacco Heron and Purple Heron and Great White Egret.

Raptors include both kites and Marsh Harrier, Common Buzzard and Common Kestrel, Osprey, and sometimes Egyptian Vulture which has bred but occurs mainly as a scarce migrant.

Other regular spring migrants are the colourful European Roller, Hoopoe and European Bee-eater. The nearby town of Matera is well-known for its breeding colony of Lesser Kestrel.

Midsummer sees fewer birds but with autumn approaching duck numbers begin to build up and thousands are present in winter. Mallard, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Teal and Common Pochard are most numerous but other species such as Gadwall, Northern Pintail and Ferruginous Duck are regular in small numbers. Great Cormorant, Great Crested Grebe and Grey Heron also occur in large numbers in winter.

Scarcer migrants seen in autumn include Glossy Ibis and storks and terns of various species are regular. Passage waders can include Greenshank and Green Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper and Black-tailed Godwit.
