[edit] Identification

23.5 cm long. Sexes similar. Mainly green, emerald-green crown and sides of head, slightly tinged with blue, back of the neck, throat and breast yellow, broadly edged with green, giving scaly appearance. Green tail, outer tail-feathers marked with orange-red. Lower flanks, thighs and undertail-coverts green are strongly marked with yellow, while the underwing-coverts are orange-red. Orange-red eyes, and dark coral bills. Grey brown legs. Juveniles are similar to adults in appearance, with shorter tails, pale brown or black eyes, and bills are brown with some yellow markings or orange with brown markings.

Coastal plains and watercourses and open, lightly-timbered areas.

The diet includes nectar and pollen, blossoms, berries, other fruit, seeds, and insects and their larvae. They are fond of cultivated fruits and can cause damage in orchards.

They nest in hollow trees, high above the ground; the nest is lined with a layer of wood dust. 2 white, oval eggs are laid and incubated by the female for about 25 days. Both parents feed the young, which leave the nest six to eight weeks after hatching.
