Central and South America.
Central America: Mexico, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama
South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Five subspecies are recognized[1]:
- L. s. stonei
- L. s. noctivagus
- L. s. schaeferi
- L. s. semitorquatus
- L. s. nattereri
The last subspecies has been proposed split as a full species, L. nattereri[2].
