Identification
Male
- Plain olive brown upperparts
- Bright red throat edged with a narrow black and then a broad white border
- Grey breast and sides
- White belly
- Black tail with red sides
- Strong white supercilium
- Head has white stripes above and below eyes
Females lack the brightly coloured throat and borders
Distribution
Siberia to Japan; wintering to south-east Asia, Philippines and Palau Island.
Taxonomy
Monotypic[1]
Formerly placed in genus Luscinia.
Habitat
Mixed coniferous forest and forest edges with undergrowth; also marshes, reeds, coastal scrub, paddyfields and suburbs.
Behaviour
Breeding
It nests near the ground.

It forages on the ground; the diet includes insects and berries.
