Identification

Male

  • Plain olive brown upperparts
  • Bright red throat edged with a narrow black and then a broad white border
  • Grey breast and sides
  • White belly
  • Black tail with red sides
  • Strong white supercilium
  • Head has white stripes above and below eyes
Female 1st winter

Females lack the brightly coloured throat and borders

Distribution

Siberia to Japan; wintering to south-east Asia, Philippines and Palau Island.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Formerly placed in genus Luscinia.

Habitat

Mixed coniferous forest and forest edges with undergrowth; also marshes, reeds, coastal scrub, paddyfields and suburbs.

Breeding

It nests near the ground.

Diet

It forages on the ground; the diet includes insects and berries.
