14cm.

  • Black crest, face and bib
  • Silvery cheeks and sides of the neck
  • Rufous-brown wings with white wing-bars
  • Black tail with bold white bars

Females are pale rufous above with brighter rufous on the crown and tail and buffy-white on the underparts.

Distribution

Northeast Brazil.
Fairly common in its small range.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
It may form a superspecies with Black-crested Antshrike and Collared Antshrike.

Habitat

Dry forests and shrubland (caatinga). Occurs up to 1100m.

Behaviour

Feeds on insects and other arthropods.
Forages usually in dense cover, singly, in pairs or in mixed-species flocks.
No information about breeding.
Probably a resident species.
