Identification

Length 18-20 cm. Dark grey plumage; head darker than body.

Similar species

Black morph Zanzibar Boubou is glossy black rather than sooty grey. Range does not overlap with other black boubous.

Distribution

Eastern Africa: Extreme south-eastern Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, eastern and southern Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania.

Habitat

Dry to semi-arid bush, thicket and riverine woodland.

Behaviour

Usually in pairs; Locally common but difficult to see due to skulking habits.

Vocalisation

Sings in duet; kidunk kidunk followed by chruk chruk.
