Alternative name: Spotted Wood Kingfisher

Identification
26 cm (10.25 in)
Unmistakeable in range, only similar Wood-kingfisher is Blue-capped which only occurs in Mindanao. The male Spotted has a clear green cap, which can appear brownish, rufous lores, pale blue supercilium and moustache, and black-eye stripe. The subspecies moseleyi is darker and browner above. The female has a green supercilium and moustache.
Distribution
Philippines. Only occurs in Luzon (main range) and Negros and Panay.

Subspecies
There are two subspecies[1]:
- A. l. lindsayi
- Luzon, Marinduque and Catanduanes (N Philippines)
- A. l. moseleyi
- Panay and Negros (C Philippines)
Habitat
Moist lowland forests.
Behaviour
Perches motionless in lowland forest. Only calls pre-dawn or at first light where is very noisy with 3 distinct calls.
Diet
Feeds low down in the forest, catching insects, beetles and snails, and some small vertebrates.
Breeding
Very little information is available, but thought to breed from March through May, excavating a nest hole in an arboreal termite nest.
