Six subspecies are recognized[1]:
- T. v. sclateri
- T. v. magdalenae
- T. v. klagesi
- T. v. tachirensis
- T. v. virgaticeps
- T. v. sumaco

Montane forests including cloud forest, mostly low to the ground. Found in rather high elevation.

Difficult to get to see.
