19 cm. Olive brown upperparts, fine streaking on the crown, nape and upper back, chestnut rump, wings and tail, and heavily streaked olive-brown underparts. The 2.5 cm long bill is slender and decurved. Young birds are duller with less distinct streaking.

The call is a sharp rolled djeer and the song is a whistled piiiiiiiiir piiiiiiiiir piiiiiiiiir.

Southern Mexico, northwestern Peru, northern Brazil, Guyana, and on Trinidad.

Seven subspecies are recognized[1]

Damp light woodland, plantations, gardens, and clearings with trees.

  • Diet: includes spiders and insects; it creeps up trunks and extracts its prey from the bark or mosses.
  • Breeding: It builds a leaf-lined nest in a tree cavity, or sometimes an old woodpecker hole, and lays 2 white eggs.
