Identification14-19cm. Upperparts soft reddish-brown, with white streaks, underparts buff with heavy white streaking on the breast, rufous eyebrow, black whisker-streak, white throat. The sexes differ slightly in plumage: the female has pale chestnut flanks. Immature individuals are slightly duller. The tail is black-brown, the bill black and legs blue-grey. Females have a chestnut patch below the wing. DistributionTaxonomyHabitatOpen mallee over shrubs and ground dominated by spinifex. BehaviourThe female builds a domed nest out of dry grasses and bark, lined with fur, soft vegetation or feathers. 2-3 eggs are laid and incubated for two weeks; the young leave the nest two weeks later.
