23 cm. Green, scaled with orange on the head and chest, red nape spot, dull red tail, blue outer wing primaries, yellow on the inner wing. Young birds are similar to the adults, but duller and with much less yellow in the wing. Its flight call is a toweet-deet-deet-toweet, and when perched it has a reedy zeeweet.

Costa Rica and western Panama.

Two subspecies are recognized:^[1]

• P. h. hoffmanni -Highlands of southern Costa Rica
• P. h. gaudens - Mountains of west Panama and Caribbean slope of Bocas del Toro

Mountain forests and open woodland.

[edit] Behaviour

• Breeding: It builds a nest in an unlined cavity, such as an old woodpecker hole, and white eggs are laid.
• Diet: Includes seeds and fruits, especially figs.
