Identification
28 cm.
- Mostly grey head with dark-spotted browner forehead to nape and white cheek patch
- Dull brown upperparts with blackish barring
- Chestnut scapulars and wing-coverts with grey outer webs
- Greyish-white throat
- Blue-grey breast getting whitish on belly
- Black-and-white barring on flanks
- Reddish-orange area around eye
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Endemic to the mountains of central and northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
Not uncommon but probably declining due to habitat loss and excessive hunting.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
It was formerly included in Grey-breasted Partridge.
Habitat
Found in broadleaf forest in mountains and foothills.
Occurs from 500 up to 2000 m.
