With a birdlist of around 600 species this reserve is now one of the most popular birding destinations in South America. The reserve covers more than 15,000km2 of lowland Amazonian rainforest and there is accommodation at the famous Explorer's Inn.
 Notable Species
Among the more spectacular and sought-after species are tinamous such as Great Tinamou, Cinereous Tinamou, Bartlett's Tinamou, Little Tinamou and Undulated Tinamou, Zigzag Heron and Capped Heron, Horned Screamer and Pale winged Trumpeter and Sungrebe and Sunbittern.
Raptors include King Vulture, Crested Eagle and Harpy Eagle, Slate-coloured Hawk, Slaty-backed Forest-Falcon and Orange-breasted Falcon. Owls include Least Pygmy Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech Owl and Spectacled Owl and there are many other nocturnal birds such as Great Potoo, Long-tailed Potoo and Rufous Potoo, Ocellated Poorwill, Sand-coloured Nighthawk and Ladder-tailed Nightjar.

Accommodation at the Explorer's Inn needs to booked well in advance and the lodge is situated on the Tambopata River about 4 hours upriver from Puerto Maldonado. There are numerous trails and also canopy walkways to explore around the lodge and expeditions further afield can be arranged. Bookings include reception at Puerto Maldonado airfield and transport to the lodge.
