Identification

62-67 cm, a very large Chachalac.

  • Rather grey plumage
  • Shorter, less pointed crown feathers than Rufous-bellied Chachalaca
  • Pink bare skin around eye
  • Dark tail with pale buff or even more whitish tail tips

Sexes similar.

Distribution

Mexico.Semiarid w Mexico (c Jalisco and Michoacán to Chiapas)

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Closely related to Rufous-bellied Chachalaca and considered conspecific with it. Formerly also treated as subspecies of Plain Chachalaca.
