[edit] Identification

23cm. Orange-yellow head and vent, white belly, green wings and back, blue primary feathers, red eye surrounded by pale pink bare skin, pink-horn beak, and pink legs and feet. Juveniles - brown or black head and nape, yellow feathers on the white belly, and grey legs. Young birds also have dark brown irises, which will change to a rust or orange as the bird matures.

Amazon south of the Amazon River in Bolivia, Brazil, and Peru.

Three subspecies are recognized:[1]

  • P. l. leucogaster - Found in the eastern part of its range; green thighs and upper tail.
  • P. l. xanthomerius - Found in western part of its range; yellow thighs and green upper tail.
  • P. l. xanthurus - Found in the central part of its range; yellow thighs and upper tail.
