Identification
40 - 41cm. A medium-sized crow.
- Massive pale bill with a dark tip and a strongly arched culmen
- Dark nasal bristles parted at forehead
- Black plumage with a green gloss
- Short tail
- Eye brown or grey to bluish-white
- Black legs
Sexes similar. Juveniles undescribed
Distribution
Endemic to the Solomon Islands where found on Choiseul, Santa Isabel and Guadalcanal.
Locally common but range very small.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
The proposed subspecies vegetus from Santa Isabel is usually considered invalid.
Sometimes treated as conspecific with Bougainville Crow and may form a superspecies with it.
Habitat
Montane and lowland rainforest. Occurs up to 1000m, rarely higher. May forage in nearby coconut plantations.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects, takes also fruit.
Usually seen singly or in pairs or small groups.
Breeding probably in austral spring. No other information available.
A resident species.
