21 cm. Black glossy upperparts, head and breast, white supercilium, large white wingbar, white underparts. The female is less glossy than the male. Juveniles are brown-grey where the adult is black.

India (except Thar Desert and NE), N Pakistan, lowlands of Bhutan and Nepal and Bangladesh.

[edit] Habitat

Open freshwater wetland habitats; it has adapted well to urban habitats.

[edit] Behaviour

It builds a cup-shaped nest in a hole in a wall or bank; 3-5 eggs are laid.

The diet includes insects.
