White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher

Identification

9.5 cm

• Prominent rufous crown
• White side of head
• Black nuchal collar extending in two thin black stripes pointing towards eye and malar area
• Olive upperparts
• Black wings and tail, tertials with white edges
• Faintly streaked white throat and underpart, except for black brast side

Females are duller than males with dark grey neck and cheeks and broad olive wing edgings.

Distribution

Southeastern Peru (Southern Madre de Dios and northeastern Cuzco) and adjacent northern Bolivia (Pando) and western Brazil (Acre).
An uncommon and very local restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in the genus Todirostrum and sometimes considered conspecific with Black-and-white Tody-Flycatcher.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests with dense Guadua bamboo thickets. Occurs up to 1050 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on insects. Forages in pairs in bamboo thickets.

Probably a sedentary species.
