Basileuterus conspicillatus

Identification

13·5 cm (5¼ in)

  • Yellowish-orange crown centre, with dark grey borders
  • Dark grey lores
  • White supraloral stripe
  • White eye crescents

Distribution

South America: Santa Marta Mountains (north-east Colombia).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in genus Basileuterus.

Habitat

Cloud forests, forest edges and coffee plantations.

Behaviour

Diet

They forage mainly in the undergrowth and up to the middle storey. Their diet is little recorded, but they appear to eat arthropods and insects.

Breeding

The domed nest is placed under tree roots or on a bank. The clutch consists of 3-4 eggs.
