- Petrophassa albipennis
Identification
29 cm. Dark brown crown, neck and breast with grey bases and pale fringes giving a mottled or scalloped effect; black throat and chin, spotted with small triangular white spots; a thin black line extends from bill through the eye which is bordered on top and bottom by a single line of white feathers. Mantle to uppertail coverts and wing shields dark brown to dark rufous brown with pale rufous buff fringes. Uppertail feathers dark brown; undertail black. Primaries chestnut with patches of white, dark brown iris, black bill, purple black legs and feet. Female similar to male. Juvenile similar to adults but having feathers fringed buff and more grey throat spots.
Distribution
Kimberley Division of Western Australia and adjacent Northern Territory.
Taxonomy
Two distinct races are recognized:
- P. a. albipennis
- P. a. boothi.
Habitat
Sandstone outcrops, cliffs, gorges and boulder strewn sloped regions.
Behaviour
2 white eggs are laid and incubated for 15-19 days; juveniles fledge within two weeks.
