Distribution
Southern Asia: breeds in Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, south and central Laos and southern Vietnam. Resident.
Taxonomy
Some authorities place this species in its own monotypic genus Neohierax.
Subspecies
Three subspecies are recognised: insignis in northern Burma, cinereiceps in southern Burma, Thailand and northern Indochina and harmandi in southern Laos and southern Vietnam.
Habitat
Dry, open woodland and savanna.
