Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

Four subspecies:
- K. a. heterogyna
- K. a. anthracinus
- K. a. aterrimus
- K. a. franciscanus
K. a. franciscanus is sometimes split as Caatinga, Sao Francisco or Brazilian Black-Tyrant.
