45 cm. Black, red eyes, slightly down-curved beak, in flight large white eye-patches in the wings are visible.

East and south Australia

Two subspecies: melanorhamphos and whiteae.

Looks somewhat similar to, but has no family relationship with, the other two Choughs (Red-billed Chough and Yellow-billed Chough).

Bushland.

They forage through the leaf litter; the diet includes termites, beetles, worms, insects, grain, and snails.

It builds deep, cup-shaped nest of grasses held together with mud or sometimes manure in a tree fork. 3-5 cream-coloured eggs sparsely splotched with dark brown and lavender shades are laid. Breeding is communal with all members of the family helping to raise the young.
