Identification

17–18 cm (6½-7 in)

  • Black upperparts, with many white spots and bars
  • Dark streaked underparts
  • Red belly patch
  • Brown cheek and neck patches

  • Yellow fore-crown
  • Red nape

  • Yellow crown and nape

Taxonomy

Habitat

Dry open woodland and desert scrub.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of insects and caterpillars gleaned from trees, also fruit and nectar.
