Female
[edit] DistributionColombia and Peru to Brazil, the Guianas, and Trinidad. [edit] TaxonomyThis species has previously been thought to belong to the genus Agelaius. Two subspecies are recognized: bogotensis and icterocephalus. [edit] HabitatMarshes and wet grasslands. [edit] Behaviour[edit] BreedingMales approach females with a distinctive fluttering flight; receptive females follow males to nests. The male builds the nest in aquatic vegetation; the female adds to the lining. Mated males stay with their mate until incubation begins, then they build another nest and seek an additional mate. Successful males mate with up to five different females in a single season. 2–3 eggs are laid and are incubated by the female for 10–11 days; young fledge at about 11 days.[1] [edit] DietThe diet includes aquatic insects, grain, and weed seeds.
