Star farmer, your post on the edf prompted this one. I just found this: "To comply with strict military specifications the EDFs had to go through very tough test procedures. Among others, they were exposed to 5 cycles of temperature changes from -50 deg. Celsius to +60 deg., at 2 hours per cycle, they were sprayed with 27 deg. sea water for 168 hours, were dropped from 75 cm, were exposed to accelerations of 15g at 5-10 ms duration and accelerations of 120g at 1-5 ms duration, kept in 1 meter deep cold water for an hour etc. So there is no doubt that the EDF has got a bomb-proof design which is not found in any civilian binocular. The EDF utilizes very low dispersion glass with improved multi-coating for superior sharpness and contrast even under low light conditions - possibly supported by the yellow tint, which helps to filter the bluish glow of haze."

Zeiss EDF. Designed for nuclear war.

The EDF, the glass with a small nuclear package inside.
The reticle in the military glass used a tritium capsule for illumination.
When these were mustered out by the German Army, the tritium capsules were usually removed. However, some were sold fully equipped.
Unfortunately, the half life of the tritium is only 12 years, so the illumination provided has dimmed down to about a quarter of what it was and no capsule replacements are likely to be forthcoming.

Key tests, translated using Babelfish (R-rated material follow, for violent content)

in a random sampling way and regular some EDF were subjected:

Drop test, 0.75 m being on broadside, stretched: 1 case.
Vibration load 30 - 80 cycles per second with acceleration 6 g: 2 hours standing on objective; 1 hour being on broadside, 1 hour lying on narrow side.
Impact examination with acceleration 15 g, pulse time 5 to 10 ms: 360 impacts. with acceleration 120 g and a pulse time from 1 to 5 ms: 2 impacts standing on objective, 4 on broadside stretched, 4 on narrow side stretched.
Cold-resistantness: -50°C, duration 2 hours after reaching this temperature.
Heat resistance: +60°C, duration 2 hours after reaching this temperature. Storage temperature: +80°C, duration 1 hour after reaching this temperature (sense of these exercises it was to determine whether lubricants withdraw somewhere, which is not permissible).
Cyclic temperature examination, upper temperature +60°C - lower -50°C: 5 cycles ever 2 hours.
Stability opposite sea-fog with +27°C with a mixture from 27 g/l NaCl, 6g/l MgCl2, 1 g/l CaCl2 1 g/l, 1 g/l KCl: 168 hours.
