Mick Sway

OK 2016 had over 7000 views so it's debatable whether it's worth while, that being said I'll carry on reporting Lesvos Bird news into 2017 .
The main source off breeding season will be Lesvos Bird News run by Eleni Galinou on Facebook - click on the link to subscribe.

A good start to 2017 with a Whooper Swan and Red fronted goose.
Eleni reported from Kalloni Salt Pans today 41 different species including: 1
a great record of Whooper Swan, 1 Red-fronted Goose, common kestrel, curlew, and Widgeon.
Apparently the weather warmed up a little to-day.

Happy New Year to all B :):t::king::-O

Mick,
Please keep your posts going though it must be difficult at times and replies infrequent. There is always hope and in time Lesvos and it's people will recover, so to, the displaced humans. I hope to visit this year as it's been a few years since I was last there.
Best wishes, Pat

Lesvos Refugee crisis

Hi, thanks for these regular updates!

I question regarding the general situation on the island: is this information, written a year ago (http://lesvosbirding.com/2016/01/25/support-lesvos-tourism-2016/) still largely valid, or are there any significant changes of the situation?

Thanks, Florian

In all honesty even at it's peak, the refugee/migrant situation did not affect us during our holidays on the island in 2015 and 2016. However some friends staying at Molivos (one of the closest points to Turkey) said that business there suffered as a result of migrant reception in the small harbour.
Scare stories in the European papers and National TV News sadly destroyed the market for tourism in this part of the Aegean with many operators and flights being pulled.
Thomas Cook withdrew many flights and in 2017 are not commencing flights until 6th May, which is not much use from a birding point of view.
The reality is that problems do persist in the refugee camps and although migrants are still arriving, we are told that they are on a much smaller scale.
We didn't see any ourselves in May 2016.
There are some updates on line

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/01/concern-spate-deaths-greek-refugee-camps-170130180746859.html

I have no doubt that anyone visiting Lesvos this year will receive the warmest of welcomes from the islanders.

Starling Murmuration at Larso 11/02/17

Photos of huge murmuration of Starlings as captured by Ellada Valerie at Larso 11/02/17 (below).
Unusual for such numbers to be seen on Lesvos, I think.
