Italy, Rome: dark 'photographed' YLG or LBBG ? (1 Viewer)

well, derek, only a ring would prove its subspecific origin, but most LBBG wintering in italy/central mediterranean are intermedius birds (from s sweden, denmark, germany etc) while mantle tone in intermedius varies from almost pale as graellsii to black as in fuscus.

Thanks Lou, if its an intermedius type it is certainly at the pale end and indistinguishable on mantle colour etc from Graellsi. I wouldn't give it a second look here but as you say on range probably an Intermedius type.

derek

Even in the lightened photo it looks a tad dark for the graellsii I see round here. I get the impression that mantle tone is more variable in intermedius than the other forms, with some as black as any black-backed gull and others approaching graelsii. Anyway, this one looks like intermedius to me.
