Hands on Nature, BBC2 weekdays
This starts next Monday (28th November) and is on every day next week (3pm). It looks good. It's a guide to UK wildlife hotspots and the first episode has Chris Packham swimming with seals as well as someone else birdwatching. Episodes later in the week have whale watching, bat watching, Dartmoor, Cairngorms, East Anglian wetlands.

Watch out for the Exe Estuary programme - I hear they got a very knowledgeable, not to say good looking, Ranger to help them in the mud.
Brr, it was cold! James |

Thanks for the early warning, Must find a blank tape so I can keep all the programmes together and remember to mark the Exe Estuary one for special attention, I might get to learn something yet. Ann |
Ooooh James - you're gonna be famous!!!!! Can I have your autograph? ;)
Sounds like a good series and I'm off next week so will be able to catch them all - will probably tape them anyway. :t: Gill |

Veiwers in Scotland will need to have digital to see it, I think, as there is bowling on at that time. Just go to channel 959 on SKY (BBC2 England) or 961 on SKY (BBC2 Wales) and watch or record that. Cheers. |
I have missed the first week and hear that this series was excellent. I'll record thes week coming up, does anyone know if its going to be repeated at a better time?
May I suggest 7.00pm BBC1 to oust some of the TV's finest rubbish? |

Sorry don't know about the repeats the BBC only work 2 weeks ahead and (being sarcastic) do you honestly think they would swap a soap for a nature programme, people only want to watch garbage. I for one did tape the entire week and think it was excellent, looking forward to seeing you. Ann |
Yes,have been watching the prog on BBC2 in the afternoons,it is good, well worth taping for all you folks at work!!!.Being an OAP does have some benefits!!!
|
I agree, I think it's been a great programme. I've enjoyed the quiet enthusiasm of the reporters. In fact, I hate to say this, but in some ways, I've found it better than some Bill Oddie programmes, because I don't feel I'm being talked down to all the time. And the "travelogue" bit at the end of each piece has been so useful. What a good idea to tell us how to get to places, and how much it's likely to cost, and, in the case of Skomer, telling us how to stay there as well.
|
Aaaarrrrggghhh! I thought it started /this/ Monday, not last, and forgot to record them. I don't suppose anyone is making digital recordings of the full set, and would be willing to loan me a DVD copy, or supply one at cost? I can reciprocate with some other wildlife recordings.

Dagnabbit!
I'm fed up because I have missed the whole of the first week. Recorded todays episode and have just finished watching it. The golden eagle was fantastic. I have read that Leighton Moss was on last week too! :storm:
Funny way to do things by showing a 10 episode series in a fortnight. Bah humbug! Must remember to set the video for tomorrow..... |

And I missed Ranger James - I'd been waiting a whole fortnight for his moment, and my daughter came into the room and asked me a series of complicated questions and when I looked back at the screen, James' moment was over. (Hopefully though, I've recorded it.) |
I emailed the beeb, if you go to the "hands on nature" web site there is a link to send praise! They replied to say that they might repeat the series at a more grown-up time as this series has been so popular.
Out of interest how "ethical" was the use of that tape to get the nightingale to sing? I have no experience of people getting out their tape recorder in the field. I know that she only did it once - for the camera anyway - but is this really fair on the bird? |
I've thoroughly enjoyed the few episodes I've managed to catch.
I checked out their website as James suggested. It's now posted the series will be repeated - Quote:

Hi Folks,
Good to see the BBC is getting praise for a change, hopefully it may do some good. They still do the best nature programmes around let's hope we now get some more. I am impressed James, how did you get a reponse I never have and as you know I phone and write often enough? Are you a shareholder or on the board? Off now to have a look at the nature site and somehow move it up my favourites list for ease of use. Ann   |
Very true Ann. I only saw four episodes as it was such a daft time to broadcast them, I'm sure an awful lot of interested people would have been out at work.
Much as I enjoyed Spring/Autumn Watch with BO - I actually enjoyed watching this series more. I think it was the variety of locations and habitats. Bill Oddie and Simon King still rule though Chris Packham and Janet Sumner did a great job. I missed out seeing the other two. I sent them an email as well, congratulating them on the series and the fact that they're now doing repeats at a decent hour :t: |

I was pleasanlty surprised to get a reply from the Beeb. :t: It does seem to be a "direct" to Hands on Nature email, rather than the vague BBC info address, so perhaps that made a difference. |

Great news about the repeats - now that is a result! It will be very interesting to see what the viewing figures are. maybe I can avoid "getting out there" in darkest January and get my fix of Nature watching from the sofa instead. |
I received a reply from the Hands on Nature team today - looks like a whole new series is in the pipeline once the current one is repeated :t:

Last showing of Hands on Nature - Fri 9th Dec 2005
Hello there, I'm a new member to the site and I saw the whole first series of the BBC Hands on Nature prorgramme on BBC2. I recorded the whole series on video for my fiancee who loves nature and animals. I was so annoyed when i discovered I dodn't record the last screening on fri 9th December 2005.
I saw from your post that you were probably going to record the second week. Did you happen to record friday's last programme. I really wanted my finacee to see all these programmes so I wonder, if you agree, if I can copy your video recording. I look forward to hearing from you soon. with regards Adds777 |

As it is, I'll have to wait for someone to lend me DVD recordings, "weed" them or "bit torrent" them, or record the repeats for myself. ("weeding" is where someone makes available a copy of a recording, which is sent from person to person, who can then watch it, or er, whatever, then forward it on to the next recipient.) |
