Not sure about the res itself. It's pretty underwatched but lesser whitethroat and arctic tern are potentials. I have had mandarin there recently too.

If you are mobile visit Eccup Whin here, there are blackcap and summer warblers singing their hearts out. Also a chance of redsatart, and if you look over the stome wall there could be wheatear and whinchat in the fields.

The best view of the kites can be seen in the afternoon form north Harewood here Park at the bend where is says 33 on this map. If you walk to the wharf you will also score grey wag and there sand martins on the left.

Let me know if you need aymore info. good luck

Just south of 73 on this map is another excellent spot for Kites. Agree with Marcus about Eccup Whin. I haven't been to the res for a few weeks but Common Sand and Grey Wag should be at the Dam end, and I've had Yellow Wags there around this time of year.

I'm a one man scrum of khaki, beards and optics and I am likely to defy the docs tomorrow so should see a few of you twitcherising the duck.

I predict a sketchy distant probable Long-tailed Skua, a couple of Marsh Sands, a Monty's over and a twitchable Serin. Watch how wrong I prove to be.

Hi Peter

If youve got an OS map I would also include the circularish walk uptowards the Emmerdale village/Harewood from near the water (treatments?) place. The Kites particularly like to fly low over the Dingles pig pens next to the path.........!(seriously). There is plenty of opportunity for various warblers and buntings round here, plus red-legged partridge in small numbers and occasional grey.

Walking up the road towards the water (treatments?) place there is a pond over the hedge to the left - Ive had various waders on there in the past - curlew, redshank, oystercatcher etc but I feel something special could pop in their at some point.

A walk round the reservoir will give you goldcrest, treecreeper, woodpeckers, Jay and always a chance of a rare grebe on the water (more so in winter).

There used to be a good number of Tree sparrows by the farm house (where alot of people park) but these seem to have greatly dwindled in the last few years.

Hope you have a good day

John

Lesser Whitethroat singing on J27 today (48 YTD), now 4 singing Blackcap, plenty of other stuff to see.

Probably hopped over a fence but if anyone is counting Red Crested Pochard on their year list theres one on the lake at Batley Park, looks like it has a touch of leucism. Also in Batley, Mistle thrush nesting in the Stop light, pedestrian crossing outside the Salvation Army.

Nice one Daz
Where there many people at Flamborough?

darrenward Saturday 26th April 2008 19:16

Hi John
Not as many as I expected, but as I & Tracy got there @ around 08:00, it flew off south, and was re-found around 11:00 app, I was wearing mostly blue & well shaven, Lawts was there since first light & few other mates/birders, all in all +50, but comings and goings make the math difficult. A fine day!

Had a cracking couple of hours at Fairburn today.

Had Little Gull, Kingfisher, Cuckoo, Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Blackcap amongst others.

Marcus Conway - ebirder Sunday 27th April 2008 09:26

Met Graham at Swine Moor at 12ish nursing severe hangover. Plenty of lesser whitethroat on site with greenshank, wood sanpiper and the legs in spanking sum plum. Three swift over and five whimbrel also showing. The Jack Snipe was possibly one of the best picks I have been present to, and good to get one on the the deck. The guy admitted 'he's got a thing for snipe'.

Onto Flam for the King and it showed okish. Not as close as some judging by the birdguides photo's but we were chuffed. As I was leaving a small game bird flew across my path and out to sea. It was a quail! Remarkably my first Yorkshire Quail had been down the road at Bempton some ten years ago.

I managed to get home without getting onto too much trouble but still with a bad headache.

bitterntwisted Sunday 27th April 2008 12:07

Not much to add to 5 Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Whimbrel, 2 Wood Sand, 2 Greenshank, 3 Swift, a Jack Snipe, a Lesser Yellowlegs, a King Eider, and all the usual seabirds, except,...

Hoopoe, 25 Yellow Wagtail inc an 'odd' one (description @ http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=112631), 2 Woodcock and a 'xylophoning' Tawny Owl.

When will I next get three lifers in a day in Yorkshire or a day-list as good as that?

Graham

Any of the pics any good, Marcus?

Chris-Leeds Sunday 27th April 2008 14:13

Three lifers and two birders not at 100%. Very good going. I can't even stand upright with a bad hangover, hope you've not aggravated whatever you were recovering from Graham. I'm going over to Blacktoft tomorrow, haven't been for a couple of years so I hope there's something good there.
Chris.

Thanks, Chris. Verdict at the hospital today no ill effects - Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Jay, Stock Dove, Nuthatch and Swift in hospital grounds - all good, and frankly yesterday has so much brightened my gloom it must be good for my health.

Much at Blacktoft?
