Assuming you're doing the Pugneys bird theres also reports of Garganey over the weekend, was it ever relocated?

Is it me or does rare bird news from Flambro' always seem to be released at dusk these days?

Had a nice afternoon in good company at Pugneys. Red-Footed Falcon performing with a male Tawny Owl hooting from the wood behind the hide. Wonder why the falcon stays in such a small area, and for three days! There only seems to be Alder flies hatching over the reserve for it to eat along with bumbles and the odd butterfly. Nothing special for it to eat here? It's getting a lot of hassle from the local nesting Black Heads but still it stays!!

Replying to Mike's last post

The man's got to get home and fire up his PC before he can send in the info?
or is he suppressor hoping for the bird to clear out overnight, so he can grip everybody off?

The bird has be known to Flambro' birders for 3 days. I guess they have their reasons for not releasing the news before now.

They just seem to let out the news when I'm in my pyjamas, drinking my cocoa (and it's dark outside).

Been down to Paull Holme Strays over the weekend. The mudflats have been fairly quiet but the fence along the fields has given some great photo opportunities. There were also reed warbler, yellow wagtail, meadow pipit, tree sparrow and reed bunting all within about 20m
Also short eared owl hunting along the drain.

Red is the colour

Who's going to find a nice red necked phal in the next few days then?

Also I have obtained a pass for Saturday. However, I have a poker night on Friday so who knows....

I'm out and about this weekend again so can only hope!!!! B (:

tbh as long as the weather is ok and I see the remaining common migrants that hadn't yet arrived in April I'll be happy. Extra effort for Garden Warbler after inexplicably missing out last year. A late evening bike ride around the lanes listening for Groppers is definitely on the cards - didn't get enough time to do that last year.

As for realistic scarcities - there seems to be Hobbies around so I'd settle for one of those please. After Peocile's Osprey north over Bransholme I'll be checking out Wansford fish farms for a while... and there's apparently a few freshly drilled pea fields near there that could be Dotterel-tastic (just a bit late though?)

Either way May rocks so I'm dead excited to be let off the leash :t:

Cheers,
Bob.

Perhaps if more twitchers spent more time looking for rarities at one of the top sites in Yorkshire at one of the best times of the year there'd be less gnashing of teeth - these things don't find themselves ;););)

Cheers,
Bob.

yeah mike, you dirty twitcher (currently weighing up going for the oriole or finishing revision)

James Thomas Tuesday 13th May 2008 13:40

As I have no revision to do, Saturday is a big day out. If it sticks I'm looking at the Oriole at Flamborough and on from there. What time does the card school finish Marcus?

Sprun is like a different planet sometimes - report from yesteday.

"No migration watches due to thick fog all day which never lifted, the wind was a very fresh, cold north-easterly.

One of the worst days of the spring"

loppydog70 Tuesday 13th May 2008 15:38

hi everyone, i've got a family camping trip planned for a week in harrogate in two weeks time and obviously i would like to get a bit of birdwatching done, can anybody recommend any good places within a twenty mile radius of harrogate. can you pm me instead of putting your thoughts on the forum, all help will be much appreciated.

thanks

Spent the morning with the "Oriole" Fleeting glimpses as it dived between trees, "camped on it" hoping for a photo, not a chance, longest view 1.5 secs.....Good to see Steve (Lawts) there, hope you got a view Steve?? Decided to go for the Dotterels, in Danby, North Yorks, not so much as a sniff, 100 miles for a photo of a Red Grouse, but tomorrow is another day....;)

davidtucker Tuesday 13th May 2008 18:24

I am planning to spend a week to 10 days on Scilly this October. The Middle 2 weeks tend to be most productive for rarities/megas. I will probably be camping, so the whole trip should cost around £120 inc ferry. Would anyone be interested in a trip?? if so send me a PM and I will explore costs further.....Dave

Anyone got an idea how this affects birds moving north? Would it push them inland, would they go up and over? If it's the former then Hornsea Mere and Tophill Low could be fairly attractive over the next few days.

Dave it took three hours but I got him around 5:00pm. There was just me at one point before Mike and his wife/girlfriend Sarah arrived. I stayed put, and Mike/Sarah did a circuit of the wood. A Magpie flushed out the Oriole but fourtunately we all saw him from different points. Mike had seen him first thing this morning as well.

I heard the Jay like call a couple of times, and then he flew out and landed on a tree briefly. I managed to get a poor shot of him before he flew, (will post later). Very elusive.

The "crowd" when I arrived was about half a dozen, and gradually they left until it was just me. I was about to give up. Thank you Magpie! After Osprey and Nightingale this was the next Yorkshire bogey bird.

davidtucker Tuesday 13th May 2008 19:22

Fantastic!!!! Excellent result Steve.

I've had some cracking lifers over the last few weeks. King Eider, Woodchat Shrike and Red-footed Falcon. Today I added another one to my 'dirty twitcher list.'

Paid a couple of visits to the Golden Oriole site. On my first trip (in work time) I managed two short flight views. The bird sang briefly and made a number of loud, Jay like alarm calls.

I returned after work to find Steve (Lawts) manning the vantage point alone. The Oriole hadn't been seen or heard since early afternoon, but now the sun was starting to appear again.

In a nut shell I left Steve to walk the trail and got great flight views when the bird was flushed by a Magpie. Luckily Steve enjoyed views in my absence, before the bird took flight. Result.

Photo taken by Sarah.

Can you tell what it is yet?

EDIT: Steve got there before me!

Keith Dickinson Tuesday 13th May 2008 19:52

Reckon the oriole will stay till tomorrow?
I could be tempted to go after it.

Lawts Tuesday 13th May 2008 19:56

A couple of shots (well same shot) of the GO (if it's worked)

Clearly it didn't - too big I think - they are on birdguides at any rate!

knocker7800 Tuesday 13th May 2008 20:25

Was tempted but had some bad experiences with flamborough. Dipped 4 times in last two months.

Had to settle for stonechats locally. Although got great views of another garden warbler yesterday.

Hotspur Wednesday 14th May 2008 16:01

Had a look at old fall today. No orioles in there but I managed to call a garden warbler on call. So I smiled a bit. That and a handsome White Wag male landing on the path. Obviously it flew when i went for the camera but thats sods law. Wood Sand at Swine Moor plus Greenshank but very hazy.

Whats going on at Thorne?? 3 Red-footed Falcons - i only noticed the reports today but looks like they have been about for 3 days. Mental.
