Told the boys we were going snake hunting (birdwatching gets a resounding no) so had an hour or so at allerthorpe, one common lizard but no snakes. No crossbill, a couple of redpoll and a pair of stonechat.

Had a brief stop at Black Dyke Ings (we'll stick to that, it was an entertaining naming session), if you showed me the curlew sandpiper through your scope many thanks. Greenshank and snipe also there, missed a wood sand though and had to depart when pop and crisps had (probably) finished in the car.

Moved onto High Cliff, a buzzard was nice and I thought I had my first brambling of the winter in the hedge opposite the "car park" but didn't get enough on it for a definite sighting. No reptiles there.

Went to aunties for tea, GSW on the nuts and a juv Greenfinch being fed on the bird table!!

It's been a weekend of nearlies so far, in addition to wood sand and brambling, 95% sure of Reed Bunting on J27 which would be a ptch tick and a very small phyllosc flying between two tress whilst digging for the scouts this morning, no bins and couldn't get another sighting but it was v small and flew far more direct than a goldcrest. Oh well.

Hi JTW I saw you at the gate to the YWT area at Allertorpe yesterday, I walked the full perimeter of the woods yesterday and no crossbills or redpolls, a few crests,a pair of jays and a couple of GSW was about the best of it.
The flash at BDI was pretty good I managed the wood and curlew sandpipers.
Looks like a great place maybe a chance of American Wigeon or Green Winged Teal in the winter?

Nice to meet you Martin, that Wood Sand must have deliberately hid for me as you were crossing the A1079 towards the flood as I left. Another BF face to remember!

Scarlet Tanager
Philadelphia Vireo
Alder Fly - couldn't get the day off work to go down with James and Marcus
Little Blue Heron - gone - anyone want a ticket to Shannon this Tuesday
Amur Falcon - Dipped by 30 mins. as we chased Little Gulls at Hornsea after the RSPB boat trip meet instead of going to Tophill with the rest of you

Scope and bins going on e-bay!:-C

But you don't have to worry about Great Snipe ever again :t:

I saw a herd of red deer at Harewood when I was out with my class last spring (also managed to bring a deer tick home with me - thankfully not attached!)

From Harewood House website...

The Estate has a healthy population of larger mammals such as Red Deer, Roe Deer, Fallow Deer, Brown Hare, foxes, and badgers. This healthy diversity of species is most welcome and it is hoped that it will continue to grow.

Marcus, is your picture from studley royal of a Sika or a red deer. I went on saturday and they were displaying more than the reds or the fallows. Also there was a pure white fallow deer stag/buck in the herds.

knocker7800 Sunday 19th October 2008 21:27

Also I saw a large flock of large finches at a distance but i didn't have a scope and didn't want to brave the wrath of all the displaying male deer to get closer. I also saw a fawn that can't have been that old, strange to see at this time of year.

Nor did you want to slip in something unpleasant.

Early heads up on a rare:

The Common Crane found today in Cork will be re-identified as a Sandhill at precisely 11:11 tomorrow morning (one minute after my flight, which unless something is found soon, I won't be on).

Have you seen the pictures of the Amur coming out now! Hey ho!

mickg Monday 20th October 2008 15:26

Lotherton Hall red deer herd were putting on a decent show yesterday- 2 big males trying to herd females, calling & parallel walking etc.

Bit surprisd by this. I was there Thurs, Fri and Sunday and the Red Deer were in high season. The males were ultra defensive and there were at least five battles, between four stags. There were wardens giving out leaflets warning of the dangers! Most of the big stags are red deer and certainly all the ones I saw roaring and, ahem, spraying.

Some more on the blog of the reds and more to be added.

Sika has vertical antlers that are quite thin and spindly at least what I see and on google images. The reds seem to come out horizontally and look more boney to my eyes at least. The face is also different with the reds appearing quite dog faced. I am not even sure I saw any Sika in rut or what time of year they rut (or what the rut is like!).

Maybe we were in different areas as I saw nearly soley red deer with some fallow. There were three brambling there yesterday near the crossroads.

Forgot about Lotherton Hall, usually a ride past rather than visiting the grounds. The place is nearer home and if I get the chance and (more crucially) remember then it's one place to visit in the coming weeks.

What's the habitat like there fields and trees? Or any undergrowth such as bracken?

skink1978 Monday 20th October 2008 19:21

Didn't I tell you all a Mega would be found in Yorkshire while I was away?

Is this related to the vag-watching you are doing a thesis on? ;)

The Amur Falcon could be the centre piece of your study.

Filey Ringing week;
Noticed they got 100 birds the other morning incl. YBW, may go have a look this weekend.

Just fields & trees I think- don't recall any bracken. £3.60 to park- how much are the other local sites?

It's a long while since I've been in the grounds there but do remember a wood further into the estate. If you don't mind walking you could park in Aberford and walk up the road. There is also the Parlington Estate that has a bridle path running through from Aberford that goes toward Garforth golf course. It would be interesting to hear what someone else can find in those woods.
Chris.
