Hi all
My local patch is just north of York(Long Marston/Hessay).It can be hard work sometimes in the Vale of York but I've had a good weekend!Corn bunting back on territory yesterday, yellowhammers at garden feeders but today had Grey Partridge x2,lots of lapwing/fieldfare/redwing,Golden Plover x3,Barn owl in daylight but most spectacular was a peregrine causing consternation among lapwings and carrying off prey.Couldn't tell what the unfortuneate was....can a peregrine carry a lapwing? There were plenty of woodpigeons about too.
Finally a roe deer gave nice views

Peregrine would easily take a lapwing. Peregrine's can take/kill grey heron's! Now that I would love to see! This must be fairly frequent because herons actually have a flight to evade peregrines. This website lists American Peregrine prey and the range is very diverse; shearwaters to dippers, kestrels to owls. The mind boggles.

Nice shot too.

Can Anyone Tell Me Where The Best View Point Is To View Red Kites At Harewood Please Going There In A Couple Of Weekends Time

Keith Dickinson Monday 9th February 2009 17:03

Jussyblade
Lots of places for the kites, more or less anywhere along the Leeds-Harrogate Road once you've passed the Grammar School is good.
The dam wall at Eccup Reservoir also still quite good.
The Road to Pool from the foot of Harewood Bank.
The village of Weardley can give good close views.

Chris-Leeds Monday 9th February 2009 17:49

I keep seeing a red kite quite regularly, coming back from the gym yesterday and each of the last few weekends. Probably the same one reported in Garforth today but there can be a few around our way. Have seen three all together at the same place and time near the golf course.

Tried for the long-tailed duck at Nosterfield Quarry on sunday after work. Got on site for 4.30pm in the falling snow in the wrong clothing (trainers and no gloves). Couldn't locate the LTD and didn't have time to go to the lake with the Red Necked Grebe. Looks like a good place to go with several large lakes and a large gull roost. 2 nature reserves within half a mile of each other.

Mark.

Shhhh! Nosterfield is great, but don't tell everyone or it'll end up busy.

Better than Bedlam Lane, Tinker Close or High Weardley on here?... http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=wea...nd,%20LS17%209

I reckon you absolutely cannot fail to see Red Kite from here within five minutes, and you could easily see a dozen at once.

Will start doing that little circular walk at Pool Bank when the days get a bit longer.

The stretch of road between the traffic lights at Harewood House and the grammer school by the roundabout as you head into Leeds is as good as anywhere. I saw three there on Sunday just driving past - one of which was perched. There are a few pull-in areas but be careful it's a fast stretch of road.

Yorkshire Bird Report. The report is due out soon and is something every tyke birder should own. The service often runs at a loss so it's really important we all buy one to stop it disappearing. I have donated my snaps to them for free, and also offered to try and shift a few to BF members. I could bring them to the next meet so you don't even have to shell out for postage if you needed an additional reason to put your hand in your pocket. Please PM me for your copy as I really think it is something we should all try and support. They are steal at £10. I've cleared my inbox for the deluge that follows...

Marcus, do you mean the YNU report? If yes, as you say it's a must. I have them going back to the 70's (a few years missing). It's the official record of what's been seen in Yorks. for that year.

When is it out?

According to Saturday's Yorkshire Post it is out now:
"The 2006 Yorkshire Bird Report published by the Yorkshire Naturalists' Union is now available at a cost of £12 including p and p. Orders, with a cheque for £12 payable to Yorkshire Naturalists' Union can be sent to John Wint at: 9 Yew Tree Park, Whitley, Goole, East Yorkshire, DN14 0NZ.

You can read the accompanying interesting article about Ring Ouzels here:
http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/bird-...s-a.4957231.jp
& previous articles are achieved here:
http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/secti...sectionID=6132
It's well worth reading the Country Section of the Yorkshire Post every week & last week a couple who regularly post on Yorkshire Birdforum were even featured!
Cheers

That map centres on Harewood for me. There are lots of good places round Harewood is the answer I think!

It's out now.

As you say it's a must and I am pleased so many have contacted me so far. There's a few that haven't so please get in touch to get a copy it would be a shame to miss out, and there wont be a reprint. PM is best :t:

garry1366 Tuesday 10th February 2009 09:37

2006 YNU report is the best on to date. It's been designed by Chris Gaughan of Designwing (who does the Spurn report) and as such is a massive improvement on previous incarnations.

The team producing the report are also aiming to publish the reports sooner so they are more current (difficult in a county the size of Yorkshire) and the aim is to have the 2007 report out in the autumn.

Yeah, I hate the new Multimap,... it was supposed to be on the field near Weardley... where 73 is on this map and along the roads west and north of it... http://www.streetmap.co.uk/idmap.srf...ardley,+Leeds+[City/Town/Village]&searchp=ids.srf&mapp=idmap.srf

I guess your spot on Pool Bank has a better chance of eye-level views?
