Most of the birders I know keep to the Vice County system also, this is because the county is then easily defined, North South - Humber to Tees and East West - Sea to Pennines

Sent you a pm with the address for the mag subscription.
4 issues a year for £12.00 is a bargain.
Solely devoted to birds in Yorkshire, there is the previous quarters round up of notable birds as well as articles on people places and birds.

Melodius Warbler (re-id'd) at Spurn in the Canal Zone. Grip back for those that missed the flamboro bird two years ago and a rare bird in yorks (7th record?)

It is the third record for Spurn, and there have been a lot more records at Flamborough (not got Wilson and Slack to hand to quote how many). But still a rare and hard to get to grips with bird.

Birdguides 12:15 correction to Melodious is now corrected back to Icterine, new report at 14:05 has it as Melodious - not sure whats going on there. A couple of Honey Buzzards in county.

For those of you going on the Wykeham outing, just to let you know there were two Honey Buzzards displaying at different times (one of them a very light bird) today between 10:45 and 12:30 ish. Also several common Buzzards and a male Goshawk. Best of luck.
Mick.

Hi all, I've been working away in Birmingham this week and have no internet down there. So I asked my missus to check this site: http://www.beleefdelente.nl/slechtvalk to see how the peregrine chicks were doing. Anyways she is now fascinated and wants to see Peregrines for real. Just wondered if anyone knows the best site within 60 miles of Hull that I will have the best chance of seeing them. I've heard about some near Scarborough but don't know the exact location and i'm not familiar with this area. So any directions or maps or info would be much appreciated. Obviously PM me the info cos i'm thinking its sensitive? Thanks in Advance,
Cheers,

Last few years there has been a pair on Lincoln cathedral nesting on the north side and when young have fledged they hang around resting on the gargoils being fed and taught how to hunt for quite a time.
Good views and I'm not sure but I think they can be seen on a web cam.
Mike

Keith Dickinson Saturday 23rd May 2009 18:08

Nigh on double the distance but the birds at Malham are an absolute doddle to see.

Cheers Keith, sounds like a day out too.
Ya got any more info? Or grid or maps or viewing points etc?
Would much appreciate.
Thanks,

James Thomas Saturday 23rd May 2009 18:36

Bloody Heck! Collared Pratincole at Swilly. Think theres been some movement into the area?

Keith Dickinson Saturday 23rd May 2009 18:47

MikeJack
Here's a googlemap showing car park and the watchpoint. It's a bit of a stroll up to the watchpoint but there's little owls to look out for as well as green woodpeckers.

Terek Sand, Patrington Haven

Just returned from successfully twitching this (rather distant) beauty.
Last seen flying in the direction of Spurn at circa 1835.

An earlier family excursion to East Park, Hull, revealed:
Mistle thrush: 2
Great-spotted woodpecker
Tufted: 11
Swallow: 3

mikejack82 Saturday 23rd May 2009 19:15

Many thanks Keith!

Was going for the pratincole in Norfolk tomorrow but as it hasnt been seen since early am and has probably relocated to swilly ings was thinking of going there before heading to norfolk. What are the best areas to view from, what are the distances like and how do i get there?

briwig Saturday 23rd May 2009 19:52

peregrines

Hi Micheal,if you want to drop me a p.m. I will take you to some peregrines,no walking ,sit in your car and watch them.:t::t::t:Regards Brian

A lot is going to depend on where the bird was showing today. If it was at Astley Lake then dead easy, view from the hide but if it was over the St Aidan's side the n you'll have to view through the fence as there is no access to this part of the area.

Look here for site details

There should be someone in the hide early doors so no worries about getting in there.

Fastest way for you to get there is to shoot along the A64 to the A1, down the A1 and onto the M1 to come off at the A63 junction, turn left at this junction and then right at the next roundabout, A642 heading towards Wakefield, Hilton Hotel by this roundabout. Keep on this road into Woodlesford and keep eye out for Lidl store on the left, turn left into Fleet Lane here and keep on this road under the railway and over the canal till you get to the oil terminal and the car park on the right. You can park here at the far end.

Heard talk of a mystery tern like bird with dark wings and a white rump. I guess that's the bird then? Didn't see it myself but glad to be back on the bike for my Swilly fix.

Chris-Leeds Saturday 23rd May 2009 20:41

Copied and pasted from the Swilling Ings Birdgroup website.

"Collared Pratincole round island Astley briefly at 18.05 chased off by Lapwings and then from 19.10 onwards on round island and gull island."
I just missed the first appearance on my way back home and I'd gone by the second.

DJW Saturday 23rd May 2009 20:45

The Norfolk bird relocating???

Not been reported from Cley since early morning today.
