Surprised that within a week of the other events we now have BNG stuff being published... don't want to go on about this though... seem to remember we discussed it in detail last year, when the same thing happened.

Suspect as the BNG's are on a well wardened reserve and have hatched this info was put out by or with the blessing of the site owners.

That maybe the case. For me it seems pretty silly to publish details even after the fact, because if I were looking for a site I'd head to sites known to have been used last year. I think this is the reason annual county reports tend to use "Site A", "Site B", etc. for sensitive info.

The BNGs are splashed all over the Potteric website sightings page with photos of chicks, so I don't think we're doing any harm publicising them on here... I appreciate maybe more care should be taken in general, however.

Avocets at North Cave or Blacktoft

Not been for a while and a friend wants to see Avocets. Can anyone tell me if they are present at either location. Cheers.

Chris-Leeds Friday 12th June 2009 07:21

Don't need to travel all that far Den, just go to Swillington. They have young too.

That only works for 24 hours Pete. After that you need to contact a Mod and ask them to make whatever change is needed.

True, but it depends on the views your friend wants if it is good views, go to either you mentioned..Plenty at Toft last weekend, plus 3 toddlers at Marshland...

Swinemoor Friday morning: Kingfisher, Teal, Mistle thrush, Stock dove.
A Mute swan family appears to have fallen from eight cygnets to five overnight - unless three were hidden from view.
Am away on a family holiday in Spain for the next two weeks. Hope to get some birding done when not changing nappies. Will post a report on the appropriate section of Bird Forum.

Heading out in search of nightjars tonight. From what I can gather, Skipwith and Thorne Moors seem to be the premier sites. Any opinions on the most reliable of the two sites and best areas of each site to look?

Cheers

Nightjars stopped breeding at Skipwith c10 years ago! Wear some white patches on your jacket/rucksack & you may get some good views at Thorne Moors. They will hunt for insects over the drain on your right a few hundred yards after the entrance stile if walking in from Moorends.

When I went to Blacktoft last year they were everywhere. Couldn't fail to see them.

Secret Twitcher Friday 12th June 2009 18:00

Thanks for the advice, I'll be giving skipwith a wide berth tonight then!

Yorkshire Birding

Just got this month's YB. No mention of the Ring-billed Gull in Hull on 19/2 and the Black Kite at Blubberhouses on 15/3 in the round-up.

Not submitted? Withdrawn?

Also, anyone know if the Pacific Swift at Wheldrake 7/5 has been submitted?

Just keeping an eye on Yorkshire ticks that escaped me.

Den Friday 12th June 2009 21:18

Thanks Bob and Chris. Info on Avocets much appreciated.

Hobby and cuckoo at Fairburn yesterday.
Also had twite had the SEO site.

Chris-Leeds Sunday 14th June 2009 14:40

A decent few birds in this morning's dog walk, first a rattling lesser whitethroat, four sightings of Gsw, a little ringed plover, a reeling gropper that I managed to get close enough for a decent view and later a pair of lesser whitethroat carrying food a particular bush. With three hares as well and nice weather it wasn't a bad three hours.

My Cuckoo is back - heard him calling as I woke up this morning from the reedbed across the railway line. Had a walk with my other half at one of the redstart places but no sign - plenty of warblers and was a lovely day.

steve.hinchliffe Sunday 14th June 2009 16:16
