An Attilla the Hun is a 2:1 (rhyming slang Chris) and a Desmond is a 2:2, from Archbishop Desmond Tu Tu

Great day at Blacktoft, 2 great flight views of a bittern along with more green sandpipers than I've seen in the last couple of years.
Also had a glimpse of the ass-end of a bearded tit, as well as a similar view of a water rail.
Best thing was a poplar hawk moth that had been found which was having a rest before flying off. Biggest moth I've ever seen.

Hotspur Wednesday 1st July 2009 19:28

Thanks all for the congratulations.

Just read your latest blog James, won't be long now until your life gets turned upside down, lol. Best wishes to Mrs James.
For your camera all you need is a card reader, rather than waiting for the camera lead to turn up. Tesco have them for about a tenner.

Anyone got any ideas of where I could spend a day whilst in York accessible from public transport?

My best idea so far is Filey. I would really appreciate other options.

Andrew Tongue Thursday 2nd July 2009 06:56

Hull Valley Wildlife Group request for info please

Hull Valley Wildlife Group are trying to chase up the names of the observers of two Common Crane sightings from a couple of years back. If anyone knows the names of the observer/s (perhaps it was you?) for the following two records please PM me - many thanks!

Crane over Hornsea 10th May 2007 (bird previously seen by AF Johnson as it passed Aldbrough earlier)

Two Cranes over Hedon 29th April 2007

Much appreciated

The only problem with that, is that last week this thread's finest photographer (probably) told me that the birds were very disappointing there at the moment.

Hi, I went to Filey recently and not only were there no birds there were a lot of people including several school buses. We did have a whimbrel south and a Manxie past the Brigg, but it was devoid of waders - to be expected I suppose.

I would try and get to Bempton if you can? Or Wheldrake and the LDV

Well done james on your great result.

Mark.

James Thomas Thursday 2nd July 2009 13:14

Yes, very well done!

Continuing on the Springwatch shennanigans, it's better than my Vicar.

I'm fairly undemanding about what will be there: it's got to be better than local patchworking at the moment. Manxie would be a very nice lifer to boot.

However as for Bempton I am not sure there is a public transport link.

Andrew Tongue Thursday 2nd July 2009 13:48

Paull Holme Strays 1305 - 1410 Thursday

Little Egret: 1
Little Gull: 1 adult, later flew E along Humber
Avocet: 1
Yellow Wagtail: 2
Grey Heron: 5

just heard on the local grapevine a report of an Alpine Swift over the old RAF base at bempton, no sign currently though, may have to have a drive up to the reserve methinks !!

I didn’t have the best start to the day. I left my house early doors to pick my Dad up for work as I do every morning. Almost directly outside his house I found a freshly road-killed Badger cub (the second this year!)

I picked the animal by the back legs (still warm) so I could throw it into the hedge, just as a rather attractive blond drove by, shaking her head and mouthing some kind of obscenity at me!

I now need an Alpine Swift to cheer me up!

Short-tailed Vole for sure.

Had a mad 24 hours - went on a nightjar walk last night in Sheffield, they weren't playing too well, but after a while a male showed briefly and had a quick churr.

Then this morning I had a good trip to Blacktoft Sands and got spotted redshank, greenshank, green sand, lots of bearded tits, barn owl, avocet, ruff etc. One the way back we made two detours - one at Hatfield Moors to finally catch up with the red-necked grebe which is still present and showing well, and a quick one at Denaby Ings where we picked up kingfisher, buzzard and a few other bits and bobs.

And well done to James - all the best people have 2:1s ;)

If it's an SD card I got a reader in Poundland for, um, a pound. Works a treat.

OUCH,
shame the bad timing made you look bad when someone else gets away with it. Wouldn't be so bad if she read the posts on this forum.
