Some Autumn colours for me today

Keith Dickinson Saturday 26th September 2009 18:56

Shame the background isn't in focus Marcus, otherwise it's not a bad picture;)

Was it a natural perch or did you supply it?

Thanks, Keith. Not sure if it is natural, but I didn't put it there.

I thought you have a zoology degree, that picture looks more like you studied art instead!

Keith Dickinson Saturday 26th September 2009 20:18

Dave

for Sprotborough

from Old Moor, make for the A1 by your preferred route, go south to the A630 junction and take a right turn (west), follow A630 and after roughly 1/2 mile at the traffic lights turn right (north) for Sprotborough and the Don Gorge. After this it is just a case of following the road and parking in the car park by the canal. It's a few years since I was there but I don't think things will have changed that much

No comments about being good with colours!

Anyway I also got this too - one of several. Still no Holly Blue - they seem thin on the ground this Autumn

I thought you only liked butterflies with their wings closed. Hope you got one displaying its comma ;)

If anyone has a Hedgehog visiting them and wouldn't mind allowing me to get some shots in exchange for some mounted prints that would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Rarely see them these days, especially not in the garden. Got a nice frog though.

As I often wonder as a relative newcomer to migration issues:

Could anyone explain what makes Spurn Point such a popular place to find passing migrants ? I have often wondered why so many interesting species end up there.

Cheers guys.

James Thomas Sunday 27th September 2009 20:04

There'll be many who will have a far better idea than me but in autumn at least it's like a huge heligoland trap, any birds travelling south will be funnelled down Spurn.

Very quiet day at Spurn, only scarce anywhere near was (typical!) barred warbler at the Warren, which was very skittish and gave poor shows compared the one at Flam on the BF Meet. Missed the lapland buntings, but picked up one lifer in form of a very obliging snow bunting, and a year tick for red-throated diver. Lots of grey seals bobbing around too, and a good range of waders on show.

Good day out though - but can't believe the lack of migrants on their way out. I expected to at least pick up spotted fly, pied fly or redstart, but there wasn't a sign of any. Only migrants around seemed to be wheatears, whinchats and a couple of chiffchaffs.

Very nice - any chance of a pm on location. Understand if thats not poss.

tophillbirder Sunday 27th September 2009 22:39

Surprise no-one mentioned them on the thread but thought I'd better say the the 2 juv/fem American Wigeons present at Tophill Low NR for the last week and on the Hull Valley site are considered by several birders to be hybrids [Not going into details here but I'll explain to those who might take offence when I see them next].

Snow Goose over Bridlington with Pinkies early Saturday morning. Did they go through Spurn? No mention further south. Could have been the Orkney bird which was missing y'day.

mikejack82 Monday 28th September 2009 01:45

About 20 pinkies this PM, North(!!!) over Cottingham...
Is this odd???

Its as James said the place is like a funnel for migrants, also the place is very well watched by good birders and all news is put out almost daily all year which inturn attracts more lookers.

In my opinion its the best place on mainland to see migration and a good chance of scarce and rare stuff.
