If you click on the arrow in the blue square at the end of a quote it takes you to the original post. A bit bored today unless you haven't noticed.

You were happy to tick it though ;) Enough already

Just in case anyone hadn't noticed, several of the previous posts were just for a bit of fun and not to be taken seriously.

The fact that Trystan paid me in forged tenners is neither here nor there ;)

1 Male and 1 Female Mandarin still at Adel NR, from both hides, plus 2 Male barely visible tucked behind willows at far end of dam. Woods and the feeders very busy. On Golden Acre Park pond had just one pair of Goosanders plus mobs of the usual suspects, (inc the Bar Headed Goose which hangs around the picnic tables). Pauls pond quiet, just 12+ tufted ducks, but the again the woods there very busy.

There also seems to be some decent stuff around on Wintersett & Anglers which would make some decent additions to my life list! Having never been to these sites, would be grateful for pointers on how to pick up the American Wigeon & Grebe.

Richard

Hi Richard

A Wigeon - last few times I have been has been feeding on the banking on the right hand side of the lake as you walk down from the car park past the visitor centre/cafe. Viewable from the picnic tables by the lake here.

BN Grebe - If you have a OS Map easiest way to find it is to head to the south west corner of wintersett res (top res). Its not always close in so you may need a scope to get a decent view.

Smew - again with OS map - it tends to be on the western side of Wintersett res - find the point where you are stood between wintersett res and cold hiendley res.

At fairburnings a pair of brambling were showing well by the feeders at pick up hide the other week, they may still be about.

Good luck

John

What time were you there? I managed a couple of full adult Iceland gulls but dipped on the glaucous. I left the usual lay by at around 415. It was my second attempt and well worth it for a lifer.

schiffornis Saturday 10th March 2012 12:50

Think we were there around about 1545-1645, saw some (3/4) people in layby from the main road as we arrived but no birds so didn't stop until we saw flock a bit further along nearer the garden centre

The adult Icelands were rather smart!

Cheers Andy

Ken and I had a good time at a couple of sites today. First time I've ever watched direct interaction between 2 goshawks, male and female, whilst earlier in the day we'd several singing woodlarks and we managed to get a couple of birds in display flight.
Thanks to there being no traffic on the road at the time we also got a decent view of a grey partridge, I saw the bird in a field and slammed on the anchors so Ken could id it with bins. Nice.
That well known car park near Scarboro did the trick as well, marsh tit within 10 minutes of parking up.
All in all a great way to spend Saturday, much better than contact lenses.

Managed 2 of my targets for today - had 2 Kingfishers from the screen at Fairburn, although we arrived a couple of minutes after one was within photographing distance :-C. It was well hidden amonst the trees when I spotted but managed to get it in the scope so others at the screen got good views.

Then nipped over to Anglers & thanks to a group of birders on site who put me onto the American Wigeon. They told me that the BN Grebe appears to have left the area, so didn't connect with that, but still happy with another lifer for the list.

4 Iceland Gulls at Wheldrake this evening at the roost: 1 adult, 1 second winter (very dark bird) and 2 1st winters.

Will be some photos of these (and yesterdays white-wingers at Poppleton) here soon.

Cheers Andy

A half hour stunning (distant) display today by an SEO and a Barn owl pictures rubbish (just for the record) and no way do them justice, the SEO was very aggressive towards the Barn Owl. back tomorrow for better pics hopefully!! :t:

A couple from today at Fairburn. Nothing particularly rare, but I was quite pleased with how they turned out!!

BirdFlower Sunday 11th March 2012 11:53

The Allerthorpe Wood feeding station has been closed down. Apparently, because it has encouraged rats, & rats take "eggs & young from bird's nests".

Those of you who know the area will realise the likely effect of rats on all the domestic properties in the vicinity. And of course, you don't find any rats at all in the countryside, & especially not at the nearby stables! ;)

First mink spotted this afternoon also had plenty of curlew, teal, wigeon, gadwall, and redshank swans thin on the ground but the afternoon was capped off with a nice display by a single sandmartin.
