Colour-ringed birds in the LDV

For those interested, some interesting ringing info on the LDV NNR blog involving Woodlark, two Black-tailed Godwits, Moorhen and a Shelduck:

http://ldvnnr.blogspot.co.uk/

Anyone coming over to the LDV please try and check for colour-rings/darvics - if you see such a bird don’t always assume it was ringed locally (or that someone else has already reported it).

Walked from Weeton to Almscliff Crag, then to Otley via Riffa wood. Usual numbers of Red Kite, but more Buzzards, with some close views. Plenty of Curlew calling, and larks, but no Lapwing or Redwing; not even any Starlings. Highlights though close to end of walk. Good view of Kingfisher, then at head height on edge of hedge, and only a few feet away, a Chiffchaff and Blackcap.

A raptor fest! started out with 2 buzzards,a stunning display by a peregrine in pursuit of a skylark, kestrel and a merlin, finished off with a female sprawk. A chiff chaff calling away then 4 fieldfare, 20+curlew,2 gadwal and a first for me see below (pic for the record):t:

Does anyone know where you view from, or have specific directions?

Thanks.

You actually cannot get on to the reserve before 10.00am. There is a scrape near the car park with a hide, so you can be doing some birdding before it opens. You can get to the car park , or at least I have in the past, and I presume the hide on the right of the approach road is open. If not I think you can view this scrape from a screen.

If not go to Dorman's Pool before 10.00 - other side of the road - turn right near the lay-by, or view Saltholme East/West from the lay-by on the main road. Another suggestion is to have a look at Cowpen Bewley - about a mile away. Head north from Saltholme, first left at the roundabout and just keep going until you see the brown signs. Good feeding station and the lake nearby held Smew and Ring-necked this winter. Usually a good selection of duck + Kingfisher.

If you are after the Ibis it's 10.00am I'm afraid. Ironically last year the Ibis was on the first scrape near the car park as described above. If it's the same bird, would be nice if he'd relocate. I haven't been but I get the impression he's distant where he is now - much closer last year.

Your Glossy Ibis whispering skills are uncanny Steve! At lunchtime today the Glossy Ibis flew from Haverton, watched all the way from the cafe balcony, and landed on Bottom Tank and is still there now.

The Visitor Centre and core of the reserve is open at 10am but the Phil Stead Hide, which overlooks Bottom Tank, is open from 08:30. If you walk towards the road along the pedestrain track there is a screen to look over the Fire Station Field (where the ibis was last year) which has held 4 Water Pipits for the last week or so, though none today. While that may not keep you busy till 10 it will save you sitting in your car. For more places to go birding have a look here http://www.teesmouthbc.com/SiteGuide/SiteGuide.aspx and for more details hold your cursor over the site guide for summaries to turn up. If you know when you're coming up feel free to get in touch or post in the Saltholme topic in the Cleveland forum and I'll get back to you with the most up to date info.

Dint See It Monday 2nd April 2012 19:09

Thanks for info Lawts and Boy Wonder, me and mate went to saltholme yesterday and spent a hour or so looking for water pipit, no luck. Then spent couple of hours looking for glossy ibis at haverton view point and thought we'd dipped on that as well until we were told by a birder on a bike that it had flown down to peter stead hide, we got cracking views, it was a 1st aswell!

Thanks also Roger 1234 for the info on the rough legged buzzard, i went to langsett in the morning and got exceptional views of crossbill then spent the afternoon looking for rough legged buzzard, i didn't see it but was told that it was around. I saw a pale common buzzard that got me going though.

Now you know how i got my user name!!

Its in the field near the old tip on the north side which you get to via the housing estate near the country park.

WHICH HIDE IS PICKUP HIDE?

Keith Dickinson Tuesday 3rd April 2012 05:34

Pickup is the screen overlooking the pool behind the visitor centre. Follow the path round to the right and you'll get to it.

Good point, perhaps a new species "drilled fieldnorth of the old tip lark".

AndyK Tuesday 3rd April 2012 12:26

No bee eater about today a few bees though! Reserve staff have not seen it and it wasnt posted in the sightings book. Staff reckon they have seen a sand Martin in flight, either that or someone is laying a honeytrap!
