"Lingering" Black Kite

Anyone know how long it lingered for? I'm rather annoyed at Birdguides for not sending the message through when my settings should have secured notification of this.

Please tell me it wouldn't have mattered - key Yorkshire bird for me!

Etiquette?

Hi All

Hope you don't mind, but I'm farely new to these forums and have a question? Some of the bird information is sensitive and the information quite rightly not fully public and passed by PM. For instance there have been threads about sites of pied flycatchers in the Bolton Abbey area and more recently a merlin on the moors ( both of which would be lifers for me). Is it OK for a newbie to PM for this information or is it dependant on regular contributions and getting "known".

Regards

Mark

P.S - if you're ever in London, the Wetlands WWT is a good spot to kill some time! Was there this weekend - just short of 50 species

skink1978 Monday 23rd June 2008 16:08

Saw my falcon species in exactly the same place today and concluded that it belongs to a falconer. Not sure of the species, but the fact it landed on the bloke's arm was my biggest clue.

A Barn Owl and a Hedgehog both seen in my lunch break were definitely wild.

On the sea front? Maybe he's hunting fat kids from Donny ;)

Cheers,
Bob.

Probably depends who you ask and how sensitive they perceive the info to be. I guess the trick is ask anyway but not to take it personally if someone ignores it or declines.

Releasing info on breeding raptors is unfortunately always going to be difficult - and most folk would probably play safe and keep quiet, though obviously there are some widely known spots for certain species. My personal suggestion for Merlin would be wait till autumn/winter and get out to the coast/estuary fairly often, e.g. Blacktoft.

Cheers,
Bob.

Keith Dickinson Monday 23rd June 2008 18:03

Hi Mark, welcome to BF
Bob's right with the raptor gen, some of it is sensitive and we tend to keep it to ourselves a bit. There's some stuff that is okay to talk about, like Honey buzzard at Wykeham, Merlin and Hen Harrier at Blacktoft in winter, Peregrine nesting at Malham ... that sort of thing.
Pied fly at Bolton Abbey is another that is okay to talk about as birds are nesting close to the paths, best to go very early to avoid the disturbance by dog walkers and other visitors. Before 8.00am is good, park on Storiths Lane and enter the woods from the east close to the Valley of Desolation signs, free parking so saving over £5.00. Go upstream and keep your eyes peeled for the nestboxes on the trees, there are a number of the boxes being used by pied fly.
Try and get along to one of the Tyke Meets, that way you'll get to know us more and we get to know you.

You can get brilliant views of Merlin hunting waders & Meadow Pipits at Paull Holme Strays from October onwards

Don't know if many here visit 'fat birder'. They requested one of the recent red grouse pics I took at Barden on the main Yorks page.

Thanks all , that's very helpful. I had hoped that Bob's summary was how it might be.

I have a horrible feeling that this is probably staring me in the face but I can't see it - how do I find out about the Tyke meets?

Keep an eye on the meetings subforum, in the Community noticeboard forum

Thread here

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread....77#post1227677

for the RSPB Skua trip

and here for this Sunday's meet

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=113761

We usually title them either Tyke or Yorks and start a new thread for each meet.

No it wasn't me and I've not seen that - was it on Birdguides?

Quite a bit near me recently - Hobby at Bardsey and Wetherby, and Nightjar at East keswick - none seen by me though.

I do have a pair of Little Owl nesting about 100 yards from the house, plus regular Grey Partridge, loads of singing Yellowhammer and Whitethroat.

Marcus, do you know how long it's been there and who has reported it? The only thing is one wasn't far away at the weekend up the A1 so is probably gen.

Went up tonight - couldn't fine landfill. The directions seem to be where Allerton Park/Castle is??

Also rang Birdline North-east - no mention??

Storm Petrel

Does anyone know if any Filey ringing sessions are taking place this year, and whether they are still happy for people to tag along?

I know it's cheating big style, and I've always refrained, but thought I'd try and stick it on the Yorkshire list through this means now. I've conceded the normal route is going to take some time.

I guess once you see it fly off after being after being rung, it is no different at that point than any other bird, some of which may have been lured by seed etc.

The Tyke Meet... Important

Anybody contemplating the meet on Sunday.... the weather forecast isn't good, we'll be making a descision tomorrow night as to whether the meet will take place.

Dunno about that as they've a licence to cull goosanders on the Wharfe at Bolton Abbey. Apparently the dick for brains can't get their trout if there are goosanders about.

Lawts Friday 27th June 2008 22:51

Not quite as many but I witnessed a female Goosander teaching her four offspring how to fish on the Wharfe at Tadcaster a couple of weeks ago. Also seen them with young on the Whare at Wetherby in past years.

I lived at Tad on and off until 1976 and never had Goosanders breeding there so that's great news.
Roving Record put in for the Atlas I hope?

Had a walk up from the church to the old viaduct. As well as Goosander, a family party of Greylags, and a small colony of Sand Martins.

Little Grebe, Grey Wagtail and Kingfisher all regular at Wetherby as well.

spoonbill still at old moor today made a trip over the border from derbshire

Marcus Conway - ebirder Sunday 29th June 2008 21:52

Spent an evening on West Yorks moorland. My first day hunting Long Eared Owl spotted in daylight at 8PM, watched for 30 minutes. Also Ring ousel and stonechat. Was also pleasantly suprised to find a common lizard basking on the path. Do they occur often on the moors - I was approx 400M.

symphony Sunday 29th June 2008 22:01

Funnily enough I too have seen a small lizard on moorland in West Yorks, presumably Common. Only I saw it and my mate with me didn't believe me. That was in Calderdale.
